Ananda's father Georges stems from a wealthy French aristocratic family, while her mother Maggie is an American whom Georges met while studying at Stanford. Two girls and a boy are born of this improbable alliance, which launches a family feud between Maggie and her highly traditional in-laws. The story begins with an Anglo-Irish student, who is completing his studies in Paris, falling in love with Ananda. Initially welcomed by Maggie as a useful weapon in the war with her aristocratic in-laws, the young man instead gains the confidence of "la famille". Torn between her mother and her father, her mother and her lover, Ananda begins to fall apart. Told as the young man's recollections, this is a literary story that shows us how to understand and move on from the emotional deficits of our past.
